Across the nation, organizations like Partnerships With Industry work hard every day to educate our local communities about the abilities of adults with disabilities, and how they can be assets in the workplace. However, stereotyping and discrimination in employment decisions, especially against adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities persist.
The Huffington Post recently published an article titled, “Why Hire Disabled Workers? 4 Powerful (and Inclusive) Companies Answer.” For many, stereotypes and biases continue because they have not personally met or worked with someone with a disability, nor have they heard success stories about adults with disabilities in a work environment. This article provides four outstanding examples of how successful and notable businesses (Starbucks, Northrop Grumman, AT&T, and Ernst & Young), are utilizing the abilities, talents, and unique perspectives of adults with disabilities to improve their business. And further provides evidence that hiring adults with disabilities only benefits the business, “businesses that embrace disability inclusion have found there is a positive correlation between their profitability, employee morale and engagement. These businesses report lower turnover, better safety records, innovation and higher productivity among their employees with disabilities.”
