PWI SPECIAL EDITION STARS

We celebrate PWI’s STARS that strive to improve their lives and the lives of others.  Here are their stories!

Donald, PWI Client

“I always have a good day at work. They’re always very helpful to me. I’m doing the very best I can, and I am proud of the work I do. I love my job at the hotel. It’s a great opportunity for people with disabilities and I appreciate everything the hotel and PWI has done for me. I do the best I can every day.”

David, PWI Client. Written by David’s Aunt

Our nephew David was diagnosed with brain cancer when he was 12 years old. By the time he was 16, he was in remission. Unfortunately, the side effects left him hearing and visually impaired and cognitively delayed. He came to live with us unexpectedly in March of 2007. At the time, we had just moved to San Diego and our first daughter was one year old. My husband’s job required him to travel during the week and I worked full time as a teacher. When David came to live with us, his medical needs and emotional needs were overwhelming. Thankfully, we got in touch with the San Diego Regional Center. They initiated the behavioral therapy program David desperately needed. One of David’s strengths is that he is eager help others. Because of his limitations, getting a job was difficult and frustrating for him. Our case manager suggested that David would benefit from a work program and within a few months, David started at PWI. David was so excited that he was going to get to work AND earn a paycheck! We were hopeful that David would be in an environment where he would feel successful and learn skills that would help him in the workplace.

PWI is the perfect place for David. We have been so impressed with the case managers and job coaches at PWI. It is obvious that they are completely dedicated to helping clients like David. They spend time helping their clients identify their strengths and reach their full potential. Working at PWI has helped David develop stronger communication skills, gain a better understanding of the importance of his personal care, and build confidence in his abilities. We are so grateful for all that PWI has done for David and for our family.

Sandy, PWI Job Coach

“I love my job working with the PWI clients. Each and every one of them works hard each day and it shows. They each are working on their own personal goals and I help them to progress on their own path and at their own pace. My biggest surprise when I began working with them is just how many abilities they have to share with the workforce. They teach me every day! For me, this is a perfect job because I know I am helping the PWI clients to be successful at work and be the best they can be – and that’s a real good feeling!”

Byron, Resident Dining Supervisor, Sodexo at Point Loma Nazarene University

“Our workers from PWI are very independent and love what they do. They produce good product and do a really good job here. The PWI groups – they’re workaholics – they just love working! The teams are loved by everyone here at PLNU. They just want to be a part of what success is all about.”
